Keeping Work Flexible
By Leigh Culpepper

"Career Day" By Marc Tyler Nobleman http://www.mtncartoons.com

Longer hours and the hectic pace of business make it more necessary than ever to reframe the way people work. Here are some resources that can help harried workers find flexible work arrangements and solutions.

New Ways to Work
http://www.nww.org/
Ways to Work, (NWW), a pioneer in the work/life field, is known as the expert organization for workplace flexibility strategies. In San Francisco, New Ways to Work led the way in establishing "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" and other workplace flexibility programs. Although NWW is now focusing more on career assistance for students, its publication department still carries a line of books about innovative employment options.

Advocates for Remote Employment and the Virtual Office (AREVO)
http://www.globaldialog.com/~morse/arevo/index.htm
AREVO aims to produce enormous economic, environmental and social benefits for society as a whole by promoting the use of telecommuting as an alternative way of working. It provides public education, links to online resources such telecommuting technology vendors, and offers advice on how to set up a RE/VO-Ready Office.

Commuter Challenge
http://www.commuterchallenge.org/
Commuter Challenge points out that in this tight labor market, employers who are struggling to find good employees are often limited by commute problems. Welfare-to-work employees are good candidates for filling positions, for example, but they often lack access to cars. Commuter Challenge addresses this need with van-sharing programs, financial assistance for employers and other commuting strategies.

WorkOptions.com
http://www.workoptions.com/
This site helps working mothers (and dads too!) negotiate for a flexible work arrangement at their current job. Possible options include a compressed work-week, telecommuting, part-time work or job-sharing. The site discusses all these options and helps build a strategy with which to approach a boss. A free email course offers a flextime proposal blueprint that can be downloaded and customized to help workers asking for a flexible work arrangement.
